Meet Hospitalman 3rd Class Paul Ellefsetter, who wants nothing so much as to get through his Navy enlistment without drawing any attention to himself. He just wants to serve his four years and at the end of it have his education benefits and the status of having already served when the next war comes along. He wants to be the nail that never stands out so as not to get hammered down. Is that too much to ask?
Evidently it is. It’s a fine plan and it might work but for the fact that Paul falls in with a gang of talented—albeit flawed—fellow land sailors who, in the course of getting quite hammered themselves, lead Paul into a series of misadventures, sexual and otherwise, and Paul finds himself flying in the face of Navy regulations by the seat of his pants—when he can keep his pants on.
Set in the 1970s, Paul and his friends live in a world not yet gripped by political correctness, when men were men—at least of some of them, anyway. It’s a dizzying time of sex, drugs—and the Beach Boys—and in the course of a year-long story of lifetime friendship, Paul makes a journey of self-discovery and comes face-to-face with the hard realities of life—only it’s funny.

Shore Duty’s a very hilarious book about the misadventures of Navy corpsmen and women that takes place in the 1970s. We follow Paul, the main character and narrator, through a one-year period of trying to find his place in the Navy and in life, with quite a few mishaps along the way, involving, like the synopsis says above, sex, drugs and the Beach Boys, and some extremely funny situations that Paul and others find themselves in It is a laugh out loud book, but while much of it is told with the smart-alecky dialect of the young twenty-somethings who make up most of the novel's population, I cried at the end, when I realized how very human and truthful they are--and how much I will miss them.Product details
